Des Moines Going Out: Apple Season and Fall Fun

A quiet week for openings, but fall is on: apple picking season and the Alien Invasion corn maze are up at Wilson's Orchard in Cumming, just southwest of Des Moines.

Not much on the openings front this week, so we'll keep it short. But fall is officially doing its thing around the metro, and the orchard just southwest of town is the easy win this weekend.

Apple season is on at Wilson's Orchard

Wilson's Orchard & Farm in Cumming (3201 15th Ave, a short drive southwest of downtown) has kicked off apple picking with its Crimson Crisp variety, and the Halloween corn maze is up too, this year with an alien invasion theme. It's a full farm day: u-pick apples, a farmyard for the kids, tractor rides on weekends, plus a farm-to-table restaurant and cider pub if you'd rather someone else do the cooking. They're open Wednesday through Sunday, with apple-picking packages starting around $21 and the farmyard at $6. Check hours and ticket details at Wilson's Orchard before you head out.

More fall around the metro

If you want to make a season of it, we keep a running list of pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and cool-weather outings in our fall things to do guide, and everything we're tracking is on the events calendar.

That's the short version this week. Every week we round up where to eat, drink, and go out in Des Moines and send it in one email. Get it here, no noise.
