Where to go out in Des Moines: a neighborhood guide

Des Moines is small enough to know well and big enough to keep surprising you. The trick is that the good stuff clusters by neighborhood, and each one is good for a different kind of night. The East Village

Ingersoll and Sherman Hill

A little more low-key and local. Ingersoll Avenue runs a comfortable string of neighborhood restaurants and bars where you can actually hear the person across the table, and nearby Sherman Hill adds a few tucked-away favorites. Good for a real dinner, a slow drink after, and a night that's about the company more than the scene.

Historic Valley Junction

Out in West Des Moines, Valley Junction is the charming old-main-street option: antique shops, a summer farmers' market, and restaurants with a small-town feel a few minutes from the city. It's the move when you want the pace to drop a notch. Worth the short drive, and easy to make an afternoon of.

Downtown and Western Gateway

Where the big stuff happens: the arts festival, the World Food & Music Festival, and the rest of the city's marquee weekends all land around Western Gateway Park. Check what's on before you go and you can build a whole evening around it, event first, dinner after, all within a few blocks.
