Iowa State Fair 2026 parking: where to park, free shuttles, and how to skip the traffic

If there's one thing Iowa State Fair veterans gripe about, it's parking. The good news for 2026: there are more ways than ever to get to the grounds, including a brand-new free park-and-ride. The fair runs August 13 to 23, and here's every option, cheapest first.

The free way in (new for 2026): the Southridge shuttle

This is the move if you want to spend zero dollars on parking. New this year, the fair added a free park-and-ride from Southridge Mall on the south side. You park for free in the marked lot and ride for free on CIT Transportation buses straight to the grounds.

• Cost: free to park, free to ride.
• Hours: buses run continuously 8 a.m. to midnight (return service from the fair ends at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug 23).
• Drop-off: all buses drop off and pick up at Gate 10 off East 30th.

No parking fee, no traffic jam in the fairgrounds lots, no circling. For a family, this is the easiest and cheapest option going.

Park downtown and ride DART

If you're coming from downtown or the west side, DART park-and-ride is cheap and skips the East Side traffic entirely. Park at one of two spots and take the bus in:

• 7th & Center Street parking garage (830 7th St, just south of I-235), with expanded parking this year.
• The State Capitol east parking lot.

Round-trip fare is $3 per person (ages 10+), $1 for kids 6-10 and for riders 65+ or with a Medicare card, and free for kids 5 and under. Buses run 8 a.m. to midnight, Aug 13-22, and until 9 p.m. on Aug 23.

Park at the fairgrounds

Want to park on-site? The fair's A, B, and C lots off University Avenue cost $10. Once you're parked, the free Blue Line shuttle loops through the lots and drops you at the admission gates, so you're not hiking across a gravel field in August.

New for 2026, the fair added a parking entrance at University Avenue and East 38th Street to help traffic move. Even so, the University Avenue approach is the single most congested part of the whole fair, so if you're driving in, timing matters (more on that below).

Accessible parking and mobility help

• Accessible spaces are available in all three lots on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your plate or decal, and get there early, because these fill fast.
• New for 2026: complimentary Mobility Assistance Carts run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., six-seat carts on fixed routes between five information-booth locations, for anyone with mobility needs getting around the grounds.

A note on free street parking

Some fairgoers skip the lots entirely and park for free on residential streets in the East Side neighborhoods around the grounds. It can save you the $10, but read the signs, don't block driveways, and be a good neighbor, these are people's homes. It's a longer walk than the lots or the shuttle, so weigh it against the free Southridge ride.

How to beat the traffic

The University Avenue crawl is legendary, and avoidable:

• Go early or go late. Before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. are the calm windows. Midday on a weekend is the worst of it.
• Take a park-and-ride. The Southridge shuttle or DART sidesteps the fairgrounds traffic completely, and you get dropped at the gate.
• Come on a weeknight. Monday through Thursday evenings are lighter, and admission is cheaper too (the fair runs a discounted evening rate).
